This Guy Just Made a Playable Vinyl Record Out of a Tortilla. And It Sounds Terrible

TIME

After a joke video of a tortilla spinning on a record player to the Jarabe Tapatio (aka The Mexican Hat Dance) went viral a few months ago, YouTube user Rapture Records decided he could do one better.

So he got himself an uncooked tortilla and a laser cutter and made a playable, albeit shaky, vinyl record.

“I was already familiar with laser cutting records at 78 rpm on acrylic for use in gramophones,” he wrote in a Reddit post. “I decided to see if I could make it work on an actual tortilla.”

Rapture Records says uncooked tortillas work the best, “since they are the flattest” and it takes about half an hour to make a 7” record that lasts around 30 seconds.

As well as the Jarabe Tapatio, he’s made tortilla records that play other tortilla-related songs, including the Macarena, Yakko’s World and Puttin’ on the Ritz by Taco.

2 Ways to Beat Your Fear of Rejection, Backed by Research

TIME

We all deal with fear of rejection. Jia Jiang did too. But he overcame it… thanks to a box of donuts.

He explains how this happened in his wonderful book, Rejection Proof: How I Beat Fear and Became Invincible Through 100 Days of Rejection.

His dream was to be an entrepreneur — and that means a lot of rejection. So how could he beat the fear?

By turning it into a game. For 100 days he made ridiculous requests of strangers, expecting to get rejected.

And get rejected he did. A lot. But he also got a number of unexpected “yes” responses as well:

  • Knocking on a stranger’s door, ball in hand, he asked “Can I play soccer in your backyard?” The response? “Come on in.”
  • He asked a policeman if he could drive his car. The answer? “Do it.”
  • And when he asked workers at Krispy Kreme…

Merger Brings Together Two Big Translated-literature Awards

Arabic Literature (in English)

England’s two biggest translated-fiction prizes are collapsing into one:

mbi2016In a move that that organizers call the “evolution” of the Man Booker International — which previously was awarded on odd years for an author’s body of work, like the Nobel — it will combine with the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize (IFFP) and become one single translated-fiction prize. From the press release:

The 2015 prize having been given it is now the Man Booker International Prize’s turn to evolve. From 2016 the prize will come into line with its English-language parent and close the circle. Just as the Man Booker is now awarded to a single book written in English anywhere in the world and published in Great Britain so the new Man Booker International Prize will follow the same format for a book written in a foreign language and translated into English.

Basically, it seems, it becomes the IFFP with a…

Fox Planning Movie About Supreme Court Gay-Marriage Ruling

TIME

Marriage equality has come to the United States — and now it’s coming to the big screen.

Fox has set its sights on a new fact-based drama about the case that last month led the Supreme Court to rule in favor of same-sex marriage, EW has confirmed. Wyck Godfrey (The Fault in Our Stars) and Marty Bowen are set to produce.

As first reported by the New York Times, Fox made a deal for the life rights of Jim Obergefell, who successfully petitioned the court to force his home state of Ohio to recognize his marriage to his partner of 21 years, John Arthur (the pair married in Maryland only months before John’s death in 2013). He likely would be a central figure in the film.

The studio also acquired the life rights of Obergefell’s attorney Al Gerhardstein, as well as an-yet-unpublished book that Obergefell intends to…

New Delhi Taxi Driver Sacked for Allegedly Masturbating in Front of Female Passenger

TIME

Indian ride-sharing app TaxiForSure has found itself in hot water this week, after a female passenger allegedly caught one of the company’s drivers masturbating while transporting her across the Indian capital city of New Delhi.

The woman described the incident, as well as the driver’s rash driving and generally vulgar behavior, in great detail on social media. According to her Facebook post, she had to request him multiple times to reduce the volume of the music he was playing, and said he “got impatient and started driving brashly.” The woman was about to make a phone call when she noticed he barely had his hands on the wheel and was masturbating. “He had a smile on his face that will haunt me for nights to come,” the post continues.

The woman reportedly called Ola Cabs, the Bangalore-based taxi aggregator that bought TaxiForSure earlier this year, and was redirected to the…
